William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Garcilaso de la Vega - also called ‘El Inca’, one of the great Spanish chroniclers of the 16th century - all died on this day in 1616. It is celebrated each year on 23 April, a significant date in world literature. UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day was established in 1995 to promote the worldwide enjoyment of reading, and to recognise the role of books as ‘a link between the past and the future, a bridge between generations and across cultures’. This year on World Book and Copyright Day, discover The Library Shakspeare, an 1890 illustrated edition of the Bard’s collected plays in the museum’s Rare Book Collection.
